Mithra cults figured prominently both in Persian Zoroastrianism and within the Roman army, although scholars disagree regarding possible connections between the two. Since these were poorly documented esoteric traditions their actual beliefs and practices must be reconstructed from a variety of non-textual sources, ranging from archaeology to ethnographic studies of modern-day practices of the Kurds and the Ossetes. Analysis of the available evidence suggests that Mithra may have originated as the principal deity of the warrior class of the prehistoric Aryans.
